November rain? Creamy carrot soup

November rain? Creamy carrot soup

Wow! Aren’t we blessed, with such a beautiful and warm October! The sun on our faces, hardly any rain, let alone the stormy autumn weather we were expecting. And now, we have to prepare for November, which will inevitably show new colours…

This unexpected weather and sudden changes can unbalance your dosha’s… Dosha’s?! Yes, dosha’s. OK, now would be a good time to briefly introduce this concept. Here goes:

The philosophy of Ayurveda believes that everything in the universe is a combination of the 5 elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether or Space). This means, that also human beings are made up of a combination of these elements. There are 3 combinations in the Ayurvedic system, these combinations are called D0sha’s: Ether & Air (VATA), Fire & Water (PITTA) and Water & Earth (KAPHA). We all carry all Dosha’s in our bodies (we need all elements in our system) however, there’s always one that is predominant. This is what Ayurveda calls your basic constitution. Are you still following…?

Knowing your basic constitution can give you a lot of valuable information about yourself – and the way you can approach all elements in your life. Especially when it comes to food. There are some basic tests that can give you an indication (click here for an example), however, it takes a trained Ayurvedic practitioner to determine your constitution and your current state of health and (im)balance.
Having said all this… Back to November! As mentioned, a change of seasons, particularly sudden changes like we experienced this week can unbalance your Dosha’s. In situations like this it is even more crucial to take good care of ourselves. If we neglect our bodies and it’s needs, we can catch a cold, get sick, or feel ‘blue’.
Here’s nourishing a recipe that will balance your Dosha’s – the earthy, warm and moist qualities balance your Vata. All one pot meals are beneficial for Vata – and so are the (mild) spices that are used.
Remember, the cleaner you eat, the better you feel. So use organic products when possible!

*CREAMY CARROT SOUP*

  • 500 grams carrots
  • 1 liter vegetable stock
  • 1 onion
  • 1 table spoon fresh ginger (chopped)
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 2 teaspoons yellow curry powder
  • cilantro
  • sesame oil
  • salt and pepper

Chop the union and fry them slowly, without coloring (you can choose whether you want to use coconut or olive oil – coconut is better for pitta people). Add the ginger, cumin and curry powder and stir. Cut the carrots in small pieces and add them. Add the stock and let the whole boil for about 15 minutes – or until the carrots are soft. Blend everything, using the (immersion) blender. Non-pitta people can add some sambal or fresh chili peppers to add some spiciness. Garnish with fresh cilantro.

Whilst good nutrition is probably the most significant areas of a child’s health, what we give our
youngsters to drink is equally as significant as the standard of food we give them to eat.
Parents should make sure that meals they may be serving for their youngsters are small interval and brimming
with nutrient. According to Ayurveda the obese persons will be more prone to the subsequent diseases.
